Why Infrared, Why Electricity?

Why Infrared, Why Electricity?

We summarise the efficiency and health aspects of infrared heating among the uses of electrical energy, from everyday life to industry.

The electricity we use throughout daily life passes through many stages before it reaches our homes. Most electricity carried through power lines is used in workplaces and homes. Used in transport, medicine, agriculture, communications, industry and many other fields, electricity is also an important indicator of modernisation and has become as indispensable to our lives as bread and water. Electrical energy is obtained from natural resources.

Infrared (infrared or IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength longer than visible light but shorter than terahertz radiation and microwaves. Red has the longest wavelength of visible light. Infrared radiation has a wavelength between 750 nanometres and 1 micrometre. A human body at normal temperature radiates at around 10 micrometres.[1]

Direct sunlight consists of 47% infrared, 46% visible light and 7% ultraviolet radiation.

Infrared radiation can be used as a heat source. It is used in infrared saunas, for drying without a towel after bathing, and in infrared electric heaters; it is also used to melt ice that forms on aircraft wings. Infrared radiation is used in health and physiotherapy as well. Because it heats only opaque objects without heating the surrounding air, it can also be used for cooking.

Selecting an infrared frequency suited to the material's characteristics provides high energy efficiency.

Infrared heaters eliminate the need to heat the entire volume of air in heated spaces, saving the energy that would otherwise be spent heating that volume.

The known benefits of infrared heaters include relief of muscle and joint pain, strengthening the immune system, and relief of stress and fatigue. In addition, for patients prone to allergic symptoms, it is the healthiest heating method compatible with our metabolism because it triggers the spread of dust and bacteria in the air.
